AppGate

A mindful hurdle before distracting apps: protected AppGate shortcuts, short blocker tasks and local usage feedback.

“Breathe for a second. Do you really want to open the app — or is habit just tapping?”

AppGate remains soft mode: no hidden locks, no content control, no tracking.

Project description

AppGate does not hide apps or hard-block Android. It puts a deliberate interruption in front of apps you want to open less automatically.

You choose protected apps. AppGate requests its own launch shortcuts for them. When you later open that shortcut, a short gate flow appears first with tasks such as waiting, calculating, remembering or reflecting.

AppGate is designed for calm self-control: local, understandable and without hard system tricks.

Setup

Open “Protected Apps” and choose the apps for which you want a hurdle.

Confirm Android’s request to pin the AppGate shortcuts.

Remove or move the original launcher icons manually if the AppGate shortcut should be the normal launch path. AppGate does not delete home-screen icons automatically.

Usage

Start the protected app through the AppGate shortcut.

Complete the shown tasks. Only then is the target app opened.

Adjust global gates and app-specific rules when certain apps need more or less friction.

Statistics and reminders

Optional usage-time statistics and reminders require Android Usage Access permission. Without it, AppGate remains usable as a shortcut gate.

Reminders use local notifications and system pop-ups. Depending on the device, Android may restrict notifications, background execution and Doze behaviour.

AppGate is a soft-mode tool, not an Accessibility Service and not a manipulative hard blocker.

Privacy

Protected apps, rules, settings, local statistics and reminder states are stored on the device.

AppGate does not read content from target apps such as messages, feeds or websites. Usage Access is used only for usage duration and reminders if you actively allow it.
